Traditionally, organization, neatness, and utility were habits as highly valued in the workshop as patience, careful hands, and color sense were for the execution of embroidery (and still are!). This simple, grip-sized box was cherished by the stitcher as handy storage for her embroidery tools: sundry needles, scissors, tekobari, etc. Moreover, in her trained resourcefulness, and eschewing artificial lighting or magnifiers, she angled sunlight onto or away from the close work before her by tilting the box's mirrored top surface.

This exact same softwood paulownia mirror box is today made for and favored by professionals in Japan for its convenience and austere handsomeness. Following the workshop tradition, this mirror box is light enough in weight for use directly on the stretched fabric, maximizing utility. (Boxes from hardwood were impractical for use on the frame, due to their heaviness.)
